Working with documents |
To add a new document (a file) to the project select "Add document" item from a popup menu or from the main toolbar:
After you've clicked "Add->Existing document" item, the dialog will appear and you will be asked for a file location and data format. Document format option is used to specify how to interpret data stored in a file.
UGENE is able to automatically detect the most suitable file format, so you should use this option only if you want to override the default behaviour.
Note, that all plain text data formats could be opened as simple text files.
Unipro UGENE is able to read and write files compressed with Unix/Linux gzip utility.
You need not to unpack these files manually and can keep all your data in compressed form.
Note, that if you enter a Web location into the "Document location" edit area the option to save remote
file to a local hard drive will become available.
For some of the supported document formats "Custom settings" button can be used to adjust parsing mode while reading a file.
For example, for Genbank, EMBL or FASTA formats it's possible to specify if to merge all DNA sequences in a file into a
single sequence or show them separately. The feature (annotation) locations in Genbank and EMBL files will be adjusted automatically.
After you clicked "Add" button the document is added to the project and is automatically loaded.
Note, that document loading task is started in a separate thread, and does not block you from performing other actions.
After the document is loaded it's automatically expanded in Project view.
The lock icon in the document element indicates that the document can't be modified. Unipro UGENE does not allow modification of some formats like Genbank, EMBL, ABI, SCF, PDB that was not created not by UGENE. If you need to modify a complex document created not by UGENE you must use built-in export utilities to create a copy of the original document.
Note that you can also use usual "Open" button to add documents to the active project.
If you use this button no extra dialog will appear and you can't specify format or custom format settings manually.
The document opened will be automatically added to the active project.
The document always contains one or more Objects.
An Object is a structured biological data that can be visualized by different Object views
Now, when the document is successfully loaded we are ready to start working with its content.
